WHAT IS MIT?

Methylisothiazolinone (AKA Chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone or MI) Is one of the most commonly used preservatives in cleaning products due to its cost efficiency and long history of efficacy.

MI was initially used in paints, adhesives andcleaners. Since 2005, it has been widely used in cosmetics and household products such as wipes, shampoos, cleaners and liquid laundry products.

WHY IS MIT HARMFUL?

ENVIRONMENT

MI is “highly toxic for freshwater and estuarine organisms” according to the Environmental Working Group.

HEALTH

MI is responsible for an ‘epidemic’ of contact allergic dermatitis (2016). It was named Contact Allergen of the Year 2013 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

FACTS ABOUT MIT

1. Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is a widely used preservative found in liquid cosmetics and personal care products. Both chemicals inhibit bacterial growth in cosmetic products on their own, but they are most commonly used as a mixture in products.

2. In Canada, it is not Illegal to hide ingredients in cleaning products, and more Laundry detergents have MIT listed in their products.

3. Be aware that products labelled "natural" or "hypoallergenic" may still contain MIT, as these terms are not always federally regulated. (but Lemon aide doesn't have MIT)

4. MIT can induce allergies for some people, when it stays in prolonged contact with the skin, such as when using leave-on products (i.e. products that do not rinse with water).

5. Since the beginning of the 2000s with the increase of the presence of MIT in products, cases of allergies to MIT have multiplied.
